We are excited to have you join us and share our love of music. And it is a great pleasure to play for you in the beautiful Eckhardt-Gramatté Concert Hall.
We choose our music programs carefully and thoughtfully – a blending of the tuneful and familiar with the less known and more modern. After all, wind bands are a relatively new invention. So bravo to you and your sense of adventure! Enjoy!
Calgary Wind Symphony
The Calgary Wind Symphony presented ‘Sweet Francaise’, an all-French program featuring Christie Reside, flute, as the guest artist. Calgary-born Christie Reside is one of Canada’s outstanding wind players, and is currently Principal Flute in the Vancouver Symphony. Christie dazzled the audience firstly with her rendition of the virtuosic Concertino, op. 7 by Cecile Chaminade and then again with her evocative ‘Shadow of Sirius’ concerto by Joel Puckett. In addition to her stellar performances, Christie worked with our flute section and gave a master class to advanced flute students, to make for an incredible weekend of music. Special guests at the concert, courtesy of Servus Credit Union, was the St. Martin de Porres Senior Concert Band from Airdrie, conducted by our own Jim Kramer.
The Calgary Wind Symphony had a successful first-go at fundraising through InvestYYC. Our campaign raised over $3,000 to support our commissioning practices and operational costs.
The ensemble is a strong supporter of commissioning and performing new wind ensemble repertoire before Calgarian audiences. In the spirit of supporting Albertans, we commissioned local composer, Christiaan Venter, to compose a double concerto for two of Calgary’s top instrumentalists: Jeremy Brown, saxophone, and Morag Northey, cello. The piece was premiered at our December 2014 concert.
Special thanks to all those who contributed. You’re not only helping to keep the practice of commissioning alive but also supporting the growth of Canadian music repertoire.
